$200,000 stolen from a vehicle...in dimes!
In a unique theft, a group of about 10 individuals escaped with 10,000 pounds worth of dimes.
The Philadelphia police, around dawn on Thursday, responded to a complaint regarding a probable theft from a tractor-trailer at a Walmart store parking lot in Northeast Philadelphia, according to the New York Times.
As they examined the location, they noticed that there were hundreds of dimes scattered across the ground, gleaming in silver clusters that extended for miles.
$750,000 worth of dimes were transported via the tractor-trailer from the Philadelphia US Mint to Florida. The police claimed that as they continued to pick up the coins, they calculated that a band of around ten individuals had stolen nearly $200,000 worth, or roughly two million coins, which together weigh about 10,000 pounds.
A spokesperson from the Philadelphia Police Department, Officer Miguel Torres, said “I’ve never seen anything like this.” The police department continues to investigate the incident and the culprits until this time remain unidentified.
“If for some reason you have a lot of dimes at home,” Officer Torres said, “this is probably not the time to cash them in.”
