American Schools Ban Squid Game Halloween Costumes
After the costumes associated with the Squid Game series became increasingly popular, schools New York decided to ban them.
Costumes inspired by the Squid Game series have become increasingly popular this year for Halloween, but schools in the US state of New York decided to ban them, considering that the South Korean production, which garnered a sweeping audience on "Netflix", has very violent connotations that are not suitable for children.
In the US, children are getting ready to come to school in costumes on the eve of Halloween this year, which falls next Sunday.
“The school message [is] that games associated with violent behavior are not appropriate for recess,” Craig Tice, superintendent of the Fayetteville-Manlius school, on the outskirts of Syracuse, wrote in a statement.
Because the show “is intended for mature audiences due to the violence depicted in the show…it would be inappropriate for any student to wear a Halloween costume from this show because of the potential violent messages aligned with the costume,” Tice added.
The series, which has become a global phenomenon, depicts characters from marginalized groups in South Korea who participate in traditional games for children to win a large sum of money. However, the losers in the games are gradually killed as the stages progress.
In the series, all players wear green sportswear similar to prisoner costumes, while their guards and executioners sport a "fuchsia" jacket and a black mask that depict a triangle, a circle, or a square depending on the rank, all of which are accessories that may inspire those wishing to disguise during Halloween.
