American woman killed by shark while snorkeling in the Bahamas
A woman was killed by a shark while swimming in the Bahamas with her family on Tuesday, according to local officials.
Snorkeling didn't end very well for an American mother after a shark killed her in the Bahamas during their cruise, authorities reported Wednesday.
The 58-year-old woman from the US state of Pennsylvania was attacked Tuesday afternoon in the seas of Green Cay, near the Bahamian capital Nassau, according to Bahamian authorities.
"Tour operators along with family members attempted to rescue the female," police said in a statement.
"However, they were unsuccessful; which resulted in the female receiving serious injuries to the left side of her body."
When she was brought to land, paramedics found she showed "no vital signs of life," police added.
Her family of five arrived early on Tuesday in the Bahamas as part of a seven-nigh cruise abroad on the Royal Caribbean International ship Harmony of the Seas.
The family was on a cruise called the "independent shore excursion," not sponsored or organized by the cruise line.
In acknowledging the tragedy, Royal Caribbean stated it was "providing support and assistance" to the victim's family.
A young American woman died in 2019 after being attacked by three sharks while diving with her family in the same area of the Bahamas.
