Charli D'Amelio loses title for most followed TikToker to Khaby Lame
Khaby Lame made his reputation and most recent career by responding wordlessly to the most absurd life-hacks on the internet.
Khaby Lame (pronounced as Lah-MAY) dethrones teen dancer and content creator Charli D'Amelio to become the most followed person on TikTok with 142.9 million followers. Lame is a 22-year-old born in West Africa's Senegal but now resides in Italy. He has made his reputation by creating videos in which he reacts wordlessly to ludicrous life hacks.
On Instagram, Lame has 78.3 million followers while D'Amelio has 48.8million followers. On TikTok, however, D'Amelio had more followers than Lame until his fans launched a social media campaign to push him beyond D'Amelio's follower threshold.
Lame began his TikTok career after he lost his job as a factory worker in Italy during the early period of Covid-19. He was unemployed in Chivasso and decided to download TikTok and do what everyone does on it at first, post videos of themselves trying out dances or comedy shots.

In 2021, he started reacting to absurd life hacks without saying a single word, as he either shrugs or gives people a look of exasperation. In an interview with CNN late last year, Lame said that "I came up with the idea because I was seeing these videos circulating, and I liked the idea of bringing some simplicity to it," adding "I thought of a way to reach as many people as possible. And the best way was not to speak."
Moreover, Lame posts videos of short comedy skits he prepares but still he uses no words as he believes that the silent and expressive reactions he offers are highly relatable to people and did not require explanations.
