Dozens feared dead in Nigeria church shooting
Gunmen opened fire on parishioners at a Catholic church in southern Nigeria on Sunday, according to a state politician. Dozens of people, including children, were presumed dead.
Later, Nigerian media reported that over 50 people were killed and many others injured in the Nigerian town of Owo on Sunday in an armed attack by unidentified gunmen on a local church.
According to Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole, the assailants attacked the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ondo state on Pentecost Sunday, just as parishioners were gathering.
Many children were among the deceased, according to Oluwole, who visited the scene and the hospital where many of the injured were being treated.
While most of Nigeria has faced security challenges such as Islamic extremism, Ondo is usually regarded as one of the most tranquil states in the country.
