Mayor describes intense blasts and ongoing evacuations
“The explosions and fire breaking out in the different factories are huge,” said Gaston Granados, the mayor of Ezeiza.
Speaking to C5N television, he said firefighters were struggling to gain control of the situation: “We are trying to control (the fire) and extinguish it, but have not been able to so far.”
Granados added that the windows of his nearby home had been shattered and that families in the area were being evacuated.
Hospitals treat more than 20 injured
Hospital director Carlos Santoro confirmed that 22 patients had been admitted following the explosions.
Fire crews continued battling the blaze into early Saturday, with officials warning that the response would be lengthy. “It is a complex fire. It will be a long fire,” said Fabian Garcia, civil defense director for Buenos Aires province.
It is worth noting that the industrial zone hosts manufacturers of tires, chemical products, and various other goods. Local media reported that five factories were affected by the explosions and resulting fire. AFP reporters observed that at least one facility had been completely reduced to ashes.
