The tragic shooting happened at around 10 pm near the site of a Chinese Lunar New Year event.
Nine people have died and 10 others were injured in a mass shooting in a predominantly Asian city in southern California, local law enforcement said Sunday.
"Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are responding to assist Monterey Park Police Department with a shooting death investigation. There are nine deceased," a statement said.
The man wanted for the mass shooting that killed at least nine people and wounded 10 more was still at large Sunday, police said, more than five hours after the attack.
"The suspect fled the scene and remains outstanding," Captain Andrew Meyer of Los Angeles Sheriff's Department told reporters at the scene in Monterey Park, outside Los Angeles.
Earlier, Police rushed to respond to reports of a shooting that resulted in multiple casualties in Monterey Park on Saturday night, as per a law enforcement source.
Few details were available, including the number of people shot. Internal police communications said there had been some fatalities.
Several US media outlets later reported that at least 9 were killed in the mass shooting
The tragic shooting happened around 10 pm, near the site of a Chinese Lunar New Year event that had taken place earlier in the evening.
Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting occurred at a business on Garvey Ave. in Monterey Park. The shooter is a male, Boese said early Sunday.
Seung Won Choi, who owns the Clam House seafood barbecue restaurant across the street from where the shooting happened, told the Los Angeles Times that three people rushed into his business and told him to lock the door.
The people also told Choi that there was a shooter with a machine gun who had multiple rounds of ammunition on him so he could reload.
