Officials say nearly 800 inmates escaped from prison in the southwest of the country.
Gunmen attacked a prison in south-west Nigeria, freeing approximately 800 inmates.
Olanrewaju Anjorin, an Administration Spokesperson for the prison in Oyo state, said that “gunmen that came in large numbers” attacked the Abonlogo correctional facility with grenades on Friday evening.
“A lot of inmates were re-arrested after the attack, and it is still ongoing,” he added.
On September 13, approximately 240 prisoners escaped during an attack on another prison in Kogi State, central Nigeria.
Furthermore, over 1,800 inmates escaped, in April, during an attack on another prison in the southeast.
According to government data, Nigerian prisons hold 70,000 inmates, but only about 20,000, or 27 percent, have been convicted.
