One dead, three injured in German university shooting
The German police have announced that one girl was killed and three were severely wounded in a university shooting. The perpetrator was also killed.
The German police confirmed Monday that a gunman killed one and wounded three people in a shooting inside a lecture hall at Heidelberg University in southwestern Germany, adding that the perpetrator was now dead.
Local media reported that the gunman had killed himself and that he appeared to have no religious or political motives.
In a statement, Mannheim police indicated that "a lone perpetrator injured several people in a lecture hall with a long gun. The perpetrator is dead."
Four people were "seriously injured" in the assault, police said. Later in an update, the police announced that one girl was killed in the incident.
Police did not reveal how the attacker died.
The shooting triggered a major police operation at the university's Neuenheimer Feld campus, with police on Twitter urging people to steer clear of the area "so that rescue workers and emergency services can travel freely."

Police said that they were "not aware of any letter claiming responsibility" for the attack, and called on the public to avoid speculating.
Students were told to keep away from the campus in an email from the university, local broadcaster SWR reported.
Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, is Germany's oldest university and one of the top-ranking in Europe.
