The HTMS Sukhothai, a Ratanakosin-class missile corvette, of the Thai Royal Navy was patrolling 20 nautical miles off the coast of Bang Saphan district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province when it became engulfed in a storm.

The Royal Thai Navy reported late Sunday that the vessel had sunk in the Gulf of Thailand earlier on Sunday.

"The ship's operating systems stopped working, causing the ship to lose control," navy spokesperson Admiral Pogkrong Montradpalin told reporters, adding that the ship went down just after midnight.

Severe waves caused it to tilt starboard at a 60-degree angle and take in water. This rendered the ship's electrical power systems inoperable, causing the Sukhothai to lose propulsion. The boat began to sink as water flooded the hull.

The Royal Navy promptly despatched an amphibious ship, HTMS Angthong, frigates HTMS Bhumibol Adulyadej and HTMS Kraburi, as well as two seahawk helicopters to conduct a rescue mission.

According to an official statement, 78 members of the crew were rescued from the waters.
