A 21-year-old former student carried out a stabbing attack at a vocational college in Wuxi, eastern China, on Saturday evening, resulting in eight fatalities and 17 injuries, according to police.

Authorities reported that the attack occurred at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Jiangsu province, adding that the suspect, identified as Xu, was arrested at the scene and admitted to carrying it out.

Local police reported that Xu had failed his exams and was unable to graduate, and that he was also dissatisfied with his internship salary. Preliminary investigations revealed that, driven by frustration, he chose to lash out by attacking others, according to a police statement.

Videos shared on Western social media platforms, including X, showed injured individuals lying on the street after the attack, with bystanders attempting to assist. However, a keyword search on the Chinese social media platform Weibo yielded no videos or images related to the incident.

The incident follows closely on the heels of another tragedy, in which a driver deliberately crashed his car into a crowd outside a sports center in the southern city of Zhuhai, resulting in 35 deaths and 43 injuries.
