In recent weeks, there has been an increased focus on the Atlantic migration route, which extends from the West African coast to the Spanish Canary Islands. This comes as several boats have either sunk or disappeared along this route, drawing significant attention to the challenges and dangers faced by immigrants attempting to cross it.
Moroccan authorities have lately reported thwarting around 26,000 attempted crossings in the initial five months of 2023 and approximately 71,000 attempts in 2022. Nevertheless, it is essential to note that these figures include instances where migrants might have made multiple efforts to cross, thereby potentially inflating the overall numbers and not accurately representing the total number of individuals attempting to leave.
NGOs consistently report tragic shipwrecks in the waters of Morocco, Spain, and international territories, with informal estimates suggesting that the death toll could reach dozens or possibly even hundreds of people.
