'Israel' must comply with international law: Scholz
German Chancellor Scholz admitted that Berlin and Ankara hold differing views on "Israel's" actions but highlighted that both share concerns about civilian suffering and the need for a ceasefire.
At a joint news conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated his appeal for "Israel" to adhere to international law in its war on Lebanon and Gaza.
"Israel has the right to defend itself, and it must comply with international law, this is a requirement that is self-evident, and has long been part of the foreign policy of Germany," Scholz said following a meeting with Erdogan in Istanbul.
Scholz admitted that Berlin and Ankara hold differing views on "Israel's" actions but highlighted that both share concerns about civilian suffering and the need for a ceasefire.
"We agree that de-escalation, ceasefire, and political solutions are necessary to prevent a conflagration in the Middle East," Scholz said, adding that a negotiated "two-state solution" would be the sole means of bringing peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.
"There needs to be a credible political process towards a two-state solution, the state of Israel and a viable state for the Palestinians. That is why we continue to strive for this, despite all the setbacks we've had so far," he said.

Since the start of the war, Germany has remained a steadfast supporter of "Israel," continuing to back it on international platforms and through arms sales.
Chancellor Scholz has repeatedly stated that his government holds a special responsibility for "Israel's" security, given Germany's Nazi past and the atrocities committed against Jews during World War II.
However, Germany has continued to supply "Israel" with arms, despite a flood of documentation of IOF troops having committed war crimes in Gaza and Lebanon.
Germany to continue supplying arms to 'Israel'
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed Wednesday his government's commitment to arming the Israeli occupation despite the ongoing war on Gaza.
In an address to lawmakers in the German parliament, Scholz squarely blamed Hamas for the war, emphasizing that Germany would continue to "stand in solidarity with Israel." He confirmed that arms deliveries to the occupation would persist to ensure its capacity for "self-defense".
"That is why we have supplied weapons and armaments in the past, that is why we are doing this at the moment, and we will continue such deliveries in the future as well. Israel can always rely on us for this," Scholz stated.
His remarks followed reports from local media that Germany had resumed arms exports to the Israeli occupation after receiving alleged assurances from the Israeli government that German weapons would not be used in what has been described as a genocide.
