Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday firmly rejected Israeli ministerial proposals to expel Palestinians from Gaza, declaring before parliament that such a move "is not and will never be an acceptable option."
Tajani emphasized that "Israel's response" to the October 7, 2023, Al-Aqsa Flood has escalated into what he called "an absolutely tragic and unacceptable" situation, stressing the need for an immediate halt to the bombings and restoration of international humanitarian standards.
“The bombings must stop, humanitarian assistance must resume immediately, and respect for international humanitarian law must be restored,” Tajani said during his address to Italian lawmakers.
Tajani backs Egypt's Gaza reconstruction plan, urges ceasefire
As part of Italy’s positioning on the Gaza humanitarian crisis, Tajani expressed support for Egypt’s plan aimed at post-war recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, reiterating, "The expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza is not and will never be an acceptable option."
Since March 2, “Israel” has maintained its blockade of Gaza’s crossings, preventing the entry of food, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid. The closure has dramatically worsened conditions across the besieged enclave, according to human rights groups and international reports.
Rejecting widespread international appeals for a ceasefire, the Israeli military has continued its offensive in Gaza, launched in October 2023. The campaign has resulted in the killing of more than 54,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to official estimates and humanitarian organizations.
Tajani’s remarks mark a significant reinforcement of Italy’s foreign policy stance on Palestine, positioning Rome among the European voices, urging a de-escalation of military actions and the urgent restoration of humanitarian relief to Gaza’s civilian population.
