The people will win, Maduro says, as election campaigning concludes
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro concludes his candidacy campaign with an affirmation to defeat the far-right.
The Venezuelan capital of Caracas witnessed the conclusion of President Nicolas Maduro's extensively supported presidential campaign, with the closing of the campaign organization period for the July 28 elections.
In his concluding speech, Maduro affirmed that "The far-right will be defeated in the elections, and the people will win once again," noting that the opposition is set to suffer an irreversible blow.
He also said he would call for a national, political, cultural, economic, and social discussion that includes all Venezuelan societal groups without any foreign intervention, saying he "does not want anyone to mess with Venezuela" right after the announcement of the election results on July 29.
On his part, far-right candidate Edmundo Gonzalez concluded his campaign by urging his supporters to vote, saying "July 28 represents a day for new beginnings, love instead of hate, prosperity instead of poverty, and honesty instead of corruption."
White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby warned against what he called "any repression" in the Venezuelan elections, saying it would be unacceptable.
Venezuela's Maduro likely to secure third term in office: Polls
Latest polls suggest that incumbent Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is likely to secure a third term in office, an Al Mayadeen correspondent in Venezuela reported on Monday, as the Latin American country is set to witness its presidential election on July 28.
Ten candidates are running for the election, with the competition limited mostly to Maduro and the opposition's Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia – a former ambassador who has never held public office.
Our correspondent highlighted that the competition between election campaigns is intensifying in the eastern regions of Caracas, with the latest polls showing Maduro in the lead and likely to retain the presidency.
Al Mayadeen's Orwa Mahmoud pointed out that the Venezuelan people trust President Maduro because he belongs to the school of thought and principles of the late President Hugo Chavez and represents a symbol of continuity in the Bolivarian Revolution.
