Police in New York state shot and killed a 13-year-old boy after he fled with an imitation weapon, according to officials.

Officers stopped Nyah Mway and another 13-year-old on Friday night because their descriptions matched those of individuals sought in recent robberies in Utica, according to police. While they were being questioned, Mway ran off, resulting in a pursuit. Utica Police Chief Mark Williams stated that officers discovered what "appeared to be a handgun."

One cop then wrestled him to the ground before another officer fired the deadly shot, striking the adolescent in the chest, according to the police chief.

Mway received emergency care at the scene but later succumbed to his injury at Wynn Hospital.

Utica Mayor Michael Galime urged calm, stating, "We understand the weight of this situation and want to ensure that every single piece of this is understood."

The clip appears to show the adolescent pointing to what authorities believe is a replica firearm while fleeing. The policemen can be heard yelling "gun!" at each other.

The policemen thought they had spotted a genuine pistol, but it was subsequently discovered to be a duplicate of a Glock 17 firearm that could only shoot pellets or BBs.

The 3 officers involved, were patrolling in West Utica, aiding in two recent robbery investigations.

One incident identified an Asian male and a dark-skinned male as suspects, and a black pistol was used to rob victims. It was based on these "identifying factors" that Nyah Mway and the other teen were stopped.

Officers Patrick Husnay, who fired the deadly shot, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti have all been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the New York attorney general's office and Utica police.
