Russian FM: Foreign intervention in Cuba is inadmissible
On Monday, Russia warned against “foreign interference that would encourage the destabilization of the situation in Cuba.”
The Russian warning came after pro-government supporters took to the streets in several cities in response to the call of the Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel as demonstrations against the deteriorating living conditions were held.
Russian Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated, today Monday, “We are closely monitoring the situation in Cuba,” noting that “foreign intervention is inadmissible.”
She added, "We consider unacceptable the foreign interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state or any destructive actions that would encourage the destabilization of the situation on the Island.”
Zakharova said, “We are convinced that Cuban authorities are taking all necessary measures to restore public order that is in the best interest of the citizens and within the framework of the Constitution and the local effective legislations."
Yesterday, Sunday, the Cuban President, called on Cuban revolutionaries to take to the streets to confront any foreign attempts aimed at destabilizing Cuba.
Canel stated that “the measures taken by the US against Havana are aimed at stifling the economy, in order to open the country to foreign interventions that eventually lead to military intervention.”
This came after the Cuban government denounced foreign calls wreak havoc, stir up civil disobedience, and take advantage of the difficult situation on the Caribbean Island as a result of the pandemic outbreak, as well as the intensification of the American blockade.
Earlier on Sunday, the White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had stated on Twitter that “the US supports freedom of expression and freedom of assembly across Cuba.”
It is noteworthy that Cuba has been under an American embargo for nearly 60 years, which has prevented humanitarian aid from reaching the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, thus leading to a deterioration in the economic situation in the recent period.
