Why did the German and French ambassadors boycott the event held in the US embassy in Jerusalem?
Senior European ambassadors to 'Israel' boycotted an event held in the US embassy in Occupied Jerusalem on the occasion of Independence Day on July 4th.
'Yedioth Ahronoth' learned that among the ambassadors invited and chose not to show up to the embassy in "Arnona" Neighborhood, Occupied Jerusalem, were the ambassador of France and the ambassador of Germany. The reason behind this is that Europe does not recognize Occupied Jerusalem as the capital of 'Israel.' The embassy compound is subject to controversy due to allegations that part of the compound crosses the Green Line, according to the Israeli newspaper.
It stated that the ambassadors' decision to miss the event "is particularly embarrassing for the United States, especially in light of the fact that the Biden administration opened a new and positive page in relations with the European Union after four tense years under the former Trump administration."
Diplomatic sources also explained that Occupied Jerusalem "was and still is part of the permanent settlement with the Palestinians and that in any case, the European Union does not recognize it as the capital of Israel."
A source familiar with the stated that half of the European ambassadors were invited to the event. Among those who did choose to attend were the Romanian ambassador, the British deputy ambassador (who is no longer part of the EU), and representatives from Kosovo, Australia, Norway, Honduras, Guatemala, and Canada, which aren't EU countries.
