Cuba temporarily allows travelers to the island to bring food and medicine with them
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz said the government had decided to "allow, on an exceptional and temporary basis, for passengers to bring in their bags food, hygiene products, and medicines, without a set limit and customs duties."
"This measure will be in effect until December 31," he added during a television program attended by President Miguel Díaz-Cane and several ministers.
It is noteworthy that Cuba has been subject to an American embargo for nearly 60 years, which has prevented humanitarian aid from reaching the country during the pandemic, and led to a deterioration in the economic situation in the recent period.
The Cuban government had denounced calls from abroad to stir up chaos and civil disobedience, while taking advantage of the difficult situation on the Caribbean island as a result of the pandemic outbreak, in addition to the intensification of the six-decades long American blockade.
On Monday, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Cane accused the US of "following a policy of economic strangulation to foment social unrest " and "regime change" on the island.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez accused the US of direct involvement in organizing the protests that prevailed in Cuba since last Sunday.
