EU: Vienna Talks Could Resume in September
A high-ranking EU official says, "Iran is ready to resume the negotiations over the JCPOA," after they were suspended in late June.
A high-ranking European Union employee reported Saturday that "Iran is ready to resume the negotiations over the JCPOA," indicating that the Vienna talks could resume in early September.
Spanish diplomat Enrique Mora, the European Union's chief negotiator on the JCPOA, attended Thursday the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President-elect Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran.
According to the EU employee, Mora headed to Tehran as a representative for Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the coordinator of the Joint Commission of the JCPOA.
"The Iranians expressed their willingness to resume the Vienna talks as soon as possible and based on the article presented when they were suspended on June 30," the European source added.
He also said the Iranians told him they are ready to go back to Vienna, but they don't want to negotiate for the sake of negotiating - they want an agreement. They want success.
Mora informed the United States what his talks entailed following his departure from Tehran.
The European Union employee clarified that the Iranians must first form a government, appoint a Minister of Foreign Affairs, and then appoint a negotiating team for the Vienna talks.
"The Iranians showed no change of positions. Their concerns remain those raised by their negotiators," he concluded.
In late June, Abbas Araghchi, the political deputy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, announced that the parties to the JCPOA must make a decision regarding its future.
"Iran made its decision and the others must reach a conclusion if they want to revive the nuclear deal," he added.
