Fierce Battles Rage in Kunduz North of Afghanistan
After regaining control of two provinces, the "Taliban" movement is now seeking to seize the province of Kunduz. The fight with the Afghan army has generated "total chaos" as tension escalates.
Officials and an AFP correspondent reported that Afghan forces are engaged in fierce battles on Sunday against Taliban fighters in the center of the provincial capital of Kunduz.
Amr al-Din Wali, a member of the Kunduz provincial council, told AFP that "Fierce street-to-street fighting is ongoing in different parts of the city," explaining that “some security forces have retreated towards the airport.”
Since Friday, the "Taliban" gained control of the capitals of two provinces, Zaranj in Nimroz first and Sheberghan in Jawzan right afterward. But the fall of Kunduz, the capital of the province with the same name in the far north of the country, would constitute a major victory for the movement, as foreign forces now enter the final stages of their withdrawal.
A resident of Kunduz said, "The Taliban have reached the main square of the city. Aircraft are bombing them," speaking of "total chaos.”
Yesterday, US President Joe Biden ordered the targeting of "Taliban" militants with strategic bombers, after their advance in 3 major cities in Afghanistan.
The "Taliban" claimed responsibility for the assassination of the Head of the government's media department in Kabul, according to Al-Mayadeen correspondent.
