Gen. Frank McKenzie Met Taliban Representatives in Doha
According to a military spokesman, Marine Gen. Kenneth "Frank" McKenzie, the senior commander of US forces in Kabul met with Taliban representatives in Doha, Qatar.
Gen. Frank McKenzie, the commander of US forces in Afghanistan, met with Taliban officials in Doha on Sunday to urge them not to attack Kabul airport, according to AFP.
The US official also stated that the meeting in Doha had been confirmed, but did not elaborate on the information obtained from Taliban officials.
Mohammad Naeem, a Taliban Movement spokesperson in Qatar, previously stated that the movement seeks good relations with all countries, including the United States.
Suhail Shaheen, a spokesperson for the Taliban movement in Doha, told the BBC on Sunday that the Movement's members desire to take power in Afghanistan through a peaceful transition of power.
After thousands of Afghans swept the runway in an attempt to flee the country following Taliban control of Afghanistan, the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul suspended commercial flights until further notice. The decision was made to allow the transportation of departing passengers, as the airport witnessed chaos and shootings from US forces.
The US Department of State also stated that the airport has been secured and that 6000 soldiers have been dispatched to evacuate 30,000 US diplomats and Afghan citizens who have cooperated with the US and fear Taliban retaliation.
Furthermore, the US Central Command declared on Tuesday that the US has completed a 95 percent withdrawal of its personnel from Afghanistan.
