41% of Americans say second civil war likely in next 5 years: Poll
A recent poll has shown that Americans are increasingly either convinced that a civil war in the country is likely or very likely.
More than four in ten prospective voters in the United States believe that a second civil war is likely within the next five years, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll.
The study included 1,105 pollsters, who are all eligible to vote in the upcoming presidential election. It was conducted between Aril 21-23, showing a growing fear of the stark split in American society translating into direct confrontations.
Among the voters, 16% of respondents believed that the possibility of a second civil war is very likely.
On the other hand, 49% of respondents said that a civil war is not likely within the next five years, including 20% who said it is not likely at all. Moreover, 10% said that they were unsure.
Spurring these anxious feelings is the possibility of Joe Biden's re-election in the upcoming presidential election. A greater proportion of survey takers said that a civil war is more likely to occur in case Biden secures a second term than if former US President Donald Trump wins.
37% of responders attributed a greater chance of civil war happening to Biden's re-election while 25% attributed it to Trump's election.
Talks regarding the possibility of an American civil war have seen a surge ever since Trump was replaced by Biden as President of the United States. The issue stems from a multitude of stark disagreements on government policy and controversies related to the 2020 US Presidential election.
Americans find themselves split on foreign policy issues, pertaining to the Ukrainian crisis, as well as domestic issues such as abortion rights, gender politics, immigration laws, and constitutional rights. It is worth noting that the American society is armed to the bim. In 2023 alone, 15.9 million firearms were sold to civilians in the US, including assault rifles.
Moreover, affairs in the largest American state, Texas, have taken a dangerous turn as a growing proportion of residents are more inclined toward the full independence of the state from the US federal government.
