65% Americans dissatisfied with US global position, lowest since 2017
The Gallup poll shows that satisfaction with the global positioning of the US lessened after the US actively engaged in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which plunged to a low of 30% in 2008.
A new poll by Gallup shows that only 33% of Americans are satisfied with the United States' global position, while 65% of US adults express the opposite, marking the lowest point since 2017.
Satisfaction with the global positioning of the US lessened after the US actively engaged in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which plunged to a low of 30% in 2008. It has since varied between 32% and 40%.
Gallup stated that the last time Americans expressed satisfaction with their country’s global position was in February 2020, a month before the COVID-19 pandemic kicked in. With Trump in office at that time, 85% of Republicans, 48% of independents, and 19% of Democrats expressed satisfaction.
The 66-percentage-point gap between the GOP and Democrats was the highest on record. Now, as opposed to the time being, with President Joe Biden in office, 60% of Democrats, 32% of independents, and 8% of Republicans are satisfied.
Gallup has also asked a question gauging the Americans’ opinions of how the US ranks in the eyes of the world. The latest 42% of US adults who believe the country is viewed very (6%) or somewhat (36%) favorably by the global community is down seven points in the past year.
This marks its lowest point since 2017, while at the same time, almost six in 10 believe the US is viewed somewhat (36%) or very (21%) unfavorably in the world.
Bad timing or bad management?
Concerning partisans’ views of the US international image, they showed a deep polarization, with 65% of Democrats, 41% of independents, and 17% of Republicans saying it is viewed favorably.
The poll also shows that 37% of Americans believe Biden is respected by other foreign leaders, while 58% say he is not.
Partisans’ views for that matter are even more deep. 74% of Democrats and 3% of Republicans think Biden is respected by foreign leaders, but the 71-percentage-point difference matches the 2021 record-high difference.
According to a poll announced ten days ago, strong voter disapproval of Biden's job performance has hit 47%, the greatest negative polling percentage at any point during his administration.
Taking into consideration his unwavering support for "Israel" and continuous aid to Ukraine, Biden is dealing with international challenges as the majority of Americans show dissatisfaction with the US position in the world, think the US is viewed unfavorably by the world, and believe world leaders do not respect him.

Another Gallup poll conducted from December 1-20, 2023, revealed a lack of clear consensus among the American public regarding the US involvement in the war on Gaza.
Approximately 41% believe the US is “about the right amount” to "resolve the conflict", 39% think it's not doing enough, and 19% feel it's doing too much.
The poll also highlights partisan differences, with 40% of both Republicans and Democrats expressing the view that the US is not doing enough.
However, Democrats are more likely (48%) to believe the US involvement is appropriate, while Republicans (26%) are more inclined to think it's too much.
