According to a CBS News-YouGov survey released on Sunday, as many as 80% of prospective Republican primary voters say former US President Donald Trump should be allowed to run for president again even if convicted of mishandling classified information.

2,480 US adult residents were sampled and asked about Trump's indictment.

The 37 indictments released this week focused on Trump's alleged mishandling of classified material. These indictments pile over a set of personal, political, and commercial charges of misconduct.

Trump was already the first former or sitting president to be charged with a crime -- in his case over election-eve hush money payments to a porn star who said she had an affair with him.

Another 76% of respondents believe Trump's indictment is politically motivated, while only 12% believe the ex-President's alleged behavior poses a national security danger. According to the report, another 12% are concerned about both issues.

According to the data, 61% of those polled indicated they would not change their minds about Trump in light of the accusations disclosed in the indictment, while 14% said their minds could change for the better.

What is more interesting is that 74% of voters expressed that they would like to see a nominee comparable to Trump if it were not him.

An indictment accusing Trump and a personal aide with 38 overall criminal charges, including deliberate retention of national defense secrets and making false statements, was unsealed on Friday. Trump is scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday for a hearing.

Trump has denounced the indictment and charges to be cases of politicized justice.

"They come after me because now we're leading in the polls again by a lot against Biden," he said on Truth Social.
