Sayyed Muhammad al-Hakim died suddenly from cardiac arrest on Friday at the age of 87.
Sayyed Al-Hakim is regarded as one of the most significant modern Shiite authorities, as well as one of Najaf's most senior religious figures. He has written a number of publications and letters on jurisprudence, principles, and other topics.
Al-Hakim was captured by Iraqi security forces during the reign of former President Saddam Hussein and imprisoned from 1983 to 1991. Iraqi authorities also barred him from traveling during the Baath government's reign, and the restriction remained in effect until Iraq was occupied.
Various efforts aimed at Iraqi unity were supported by al-Hakim, including the "Popular Mobilization," in which he described its contribution to defeating ISIS in Iraq as "a point of pride for all Iraqis and the nation," praising the sacrifices that resulted in Iraq's safety and security.
