UNHCR: Limited Afghan Refugees Flowing Into Pakistan and Iran
The UNHCR spokesman details that the flow of Afghan refugees into Pakistan and Iran is still limited.
Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, Afghans formerly employed with the US occupation forces continue to leave the country fearing Taliban reprisals.
The spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Babar Baloch, disclosed Friday that Afghan citizens are not fleeing in large numbers across the borders to Pakistan and Iran, following the Taliban's takeover of the country.
Baloch added that some Afghans have crossed the borders indicating they intend to seek asylum, detailing that the numbers leaving Afghanistan "remain limited."
Last week, the UNHCR reported that as many as 500,000 Afghans may be displaced by the end of the current year.
On Thursday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry called for an investigation into the mass killings of Afghan civilians committed by the US and allied forces during their 20 years of occupation.
The spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin declared that although the US military has left Afghanistan, they must be held accountable for the killing of civilians they committed with their allies over the past 20 years and they must be thoroughly investigated.
Last Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Afghanistan, calling on the Taliban to ensure the safe exit of Afghans and foreign nationals from the country.
