Agreement in Sudan: Return of Dismissed Hamdok to Office
After reaching an agreement, the head of the Sudanese National Umma Party tells Reuters that the army will restore Abdullah Hamdok to the post of prime minister.
The Sudanese army will reinstate Abdullah Hamdok as prime minister after reaching an agreement, the head of the Sudanese Umma Party told Reuters.
The head of the Sudanese National Umma Party said Hamdok would form a government of "competencies" and that all political detainees will be released.
Concurrently, opponents of the coup in Sudan called for fresh protests to demand the restoration of the civilian government despite the crackdown that killed at least 40 people since October 25, the Sudan doctors committee reported.
Activists on social networks called Saturday for demonstrations on Sunday under the hashtag "a demonstration for millions on November 21 (#مليونية21نوفمبر).
The Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) in Sudan said the demonstrations scheduled for today still stand, adding, "We are not interested in any agreement to return Abdalla Hamdok to the prime ministership."
The dissolution of the former government
At the end of last month, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced the dissolution of the Sovereignty Council and the government, and the imposition of a state of emergency in the country, following deep disagreements between the military and political components over the management of the transitional period.
The action coincided with a campaign of arrests of politicians and senior figures, including the prime minister. However, he was quickly released by the army but kept under house arrest for some time.
In the meantime, massive protests erupted in the country and renewed throughout the week while international and regional powers denounced the actions of the Sudanese army and demanded that it reverse its decisions. Some countries announced the suspension of aid and efforts to write off the countries debts.
