Leader of the Sudanese armed forces General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in an interview with Sputnik, said Khartoum values Moscow’s balanced stance regarding recent events in the country.
"We will fully support this, as Russia is always honest in its relations with us and strives to boost cooperation and develop the Sudanese armed forces," al-Burhan added.
Sudan’s Top Army General hailed Russia’s position which backs the right to self-determination, assuring that Sudan respects and values Russia, noting that its "friendship with Sudanese people comes before the support of regimes."
Al-Burhan described Russia’s position as "sincere," noting that "it looks with open eyes, while others look from one angle and see only a half-filled glass."
Furthermore, he revealed that meetings with the Russian ambassador in Khartoum are underway.
The aftermath of the coup
Al-Burhan Remarks’ came after the latest developments in Sudan.
The military leader declared, last Tuesday, a state of emergency and announced the dissolution of the Sovereign Council and the government.
This was followed by a call for elections to be held in July 2023, adding that the directors-general in the ministries and states will manage the process until then, explaining that "an independent government will rule Sudan until the date of the elections."
Al-Burhan’s move came as demonstrations have surged in the country. Hundreds of people took to the streets in protest of the recent coup d'etat, calling for a transition to full civilian control of the government. Meanwhile, counter-protesters also gathered in Khartoum to demand a military seized power.
On Sunday, the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) stressed the necessity of ending the military coup, canceling the state of emergency, and handing over full power to civilians by order of the people, who represent the source of powers.
In a statement, the Party stressed the need to put to trial all members of the military coup on charges of insurrection and the undermining of the transitional authority, stressing the rejection of any calls to negotiate with the military members of the Sovereignty Council.
The Party also called on all the national political forces to partake in the demonstrations against the military coup in the country.
