Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmad Attaf arrived in Damascus on Saturday on an official visit to meet the head of the Syrian transitional administration, Ahmad al-Sharaa.
This marks the first time a senior Algerian official has visited Syria since the collapse of the former regime.
A statement by the foreign ministry said the visit comes as "part of the historical relations that tie both nations and their brotherly peoples and aims at showcasing all methods to enhance and elevate them to the highest possible level."
The visit also reiterates Algeria's solidarity with Syria as it navigates a crucial phase of its modern history.
Al-Sharaa is expected to receive the Algerian Foreign Minister, who will hand him a written message from his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the statement added.
When Algeria assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January, its foreign ministry announced that "Algeria intends to utilize its presidency to amplify the voices of Arab and African nations and advocate for just causes."
The statement emphasized that "the political process and the humanitarian situation in Syria will be among the first issues addressed by the Security Council."
