Gaza, Syria key issues on Algeria's agenda as UNSC president
Algeria says it intends to utilize its presidency to amplify the voices of Arab and African nations and advocate for just causes.
Algeria will assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council starting today, Wednesday, for the month of January.
In a statement published on its Facebook account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs announced that "Algeria intends to utilize its presidency to amplify the voices of Arab and African nations and advocate for just causes."
The statement emphasized that "the political process and the humanitarian situation in Syria will be among the first issues addressed by the Security Council."
Algeria will also prioritize matters related to the situation in the Middle East, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories, and efforts to combat terrorism in Africa.
At the ministerial level, Algeria aims to organize the Council’s quarterly open debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian cause. The event is expected to feature the participation of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and a representative from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) are anticipated to deliver briefings during these meetings.
On Monday, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, stated during a press conference that this meeting will be dedicated to discussing the expansion of terrorist activities in Africa and the threats they pose to the security and stability of African nations.
