Bahrain FM urges lifting Syria sanctions, says ready for cooperation
Speaking from Damascus, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani calls for lifting economic sanctions on Syria and expresses his country's readiness to expand joint cooperation with Syria in all fields.
Bahraini Foreign Minister, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, called today, Wednesday, for lifting economic sanctions on Syria.
Minister Al Zayani, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Arab League, confirmed to Syrian media his call during a meeting with the head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmad al-Sharaa (al-Jolani), and the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Syrian Interim Government, Asaad al-Shaibani, in Damascus, to lift economic sanctions on Syria.
During the meeting, Al Zayani stressed Bahrain's keenness on Syria's independence and territorial integrity and restoring its role at the Arab and international levels.
The Bahraini Foreign Minister expressed his country's readiness to expand the horizons of joint cooperation with Syria in all fields.
Al Zayani had confirmed, days before the fall of the former Syrian regime, that Bahrain was keen on Syria's security and rejected anything that threatened its stability and the unity and integrity of its territories.
Today’s meeting comes within the framework of a broader diplomatic engagement by al-Sharaa, who is meeting with various foreign delegations in his capacity as the head of the new authority.
The presence of the Bahraini Foreign Minister in Damascus also reflects a shift in regional policy, as many Arab countries, including Bahrain, have resumed diplomatic relations with Syria or expressed their intention to do so.
On Dec. 29, Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, the head of Bahrain’s Strategic Security Agency, visited the Syrian capital and met with al-Sharaa to reaffirm Bahrain’s support for a comprehensive transitional process in Syria and to discuss issues of mutual interest.
