Biden tells Obama he will seek second term: reports
Biden wants the White House again, as the incumbent US President reportedly told his Democrat predecessor that he wanted to run again in 2024 and that he believes he's the only one that could defeat Trump.
US President Joe Biden told his Democrat predecessor and the man he served as Vice President under, Barack Obama, that he is looking to run for office once again in 2024, US media outlet The Hill reported Tuesday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
It is unclear exactly when the two had the conversation, though it could have taken place when the former president visited the White House around two weeks ago.
"[Biden] wants to run and he’s clearly letting everyone know," one of the sources told the newspaper.
Biden reportedly believes he is the only one who can defeat former Republican President Donald Trump, with the source asserting that Biden did not think "there’s anyone in the Democratic party who can beat Trump and that’s the biggest factor."
Biden had formerly commented on the matter beforehand, in December, telling ABC he would run for reelection in 2024 if his health condition helped him out in the affair. At the time, Biden also stressed that the possible participation of his Republican rival only increased the odds of his nomination.
The Republican electorate sees Trump as their unofficial favorite and is likely to garner the majority of Republican votes in the upcoming 2024 election.
The former president had previously declared his intention to run, saying he would not give out information beforehand, though he has been holding rallies periodically with thousands of supporters attending.
Biden's approval rating among Americans has been in freefall for a while now, with the country being hard hit by several crises under the Democrat, from spiking COVID-19 cases despite the vaccines rolling out to the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, which took a huge toll on the country, in addition to inflation surging to its highest levels in four decades.
Other factors include his handling of the Ukraine crisis, the border crisis, and low ratings for personal qualities such as leadership, crisis management, and mental sharpness, giving Republicans a stark advantage heading into the 2022 midterm elections where it hopes to seize control of Congress once again.
