Biden: US Will Respond to Iran's “Hostile” Actions
After wrapping up his time at the G20 summit in Italy, US President Joe Biden says his country will respond to “any hostile actions by Iran”.
Following the G20 summit in Rome, US President Joe Biden vowed to respond to any hostile actions by Iran.
"With regard to the issue of how we’re going to respond to actions taken by them against the interests of the US — whether they’re drone strikes or anything else — is we’re going to respond, and we’re going to continue to respond," Biden said.
At the conclusion of the G20 in Rome, Biden said he discussed how to best encourage Iran to resume nuclear talks, stressing that the US is "continuing to suffer" as a result of former President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
On his account, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the US agrees with Britain, Germany, and France on the necessity of bringing Iran back to the nuclear deal.
Blinken added, in a statement to CNN, that it was unclear if Tehran was willing to rejoin the talks in a "meaningful way", noting that the US president and his allies are sure that the Iran nuclear deal can be restored.
On the Iranian side, Foreign Minister Hossein AmirAbdollahian affirmed that his country will not link the fate of its people to the JCPOA, notably as Iran is having serious doubts about the US administration's intentions regarding nuclear negotiations. He further stressed the need to lift all sanctions imposed on Tehran.
In an interview with the official Iran newspaper, AmirAbdullahian called on Washington to prove its goodwill by releasing ten billion dollars of his country's frozen funds, pointing out that Biden's policy towards Iran is no different from that of his predecessor, Donald Trump
