Currently presiding over the UN Security Council, Brazil has requested to hold a meeting on Friday to discuss “the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas,” as confirmed by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira was on his Asian tour when he cut it short to fly to New York and participate in a Security Council meeting called for by his country, per the ministry’s statement.

Last Sunday, UNSC members were divided during the last meeting regarding policies related to “Israel” and Palestine.

In a stand of solidarity in Brazil, hundreds of Brazilian activists joined protests and solidarity rallies with the Palestinian people in cities across the country.

This comes after the United Nations announced yesterday, Thursday, that more than 338,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Gaza due to intense Israeli shelling.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that the number of displaced people in the densely populated Gaza Strip, with a population of 2.3 million, increased on Wednesday by approximately 75,000 additional people, reaching a total of 338,934 displaced individuals.

The statement explained that nearly 220,000 people, or two-thirds of the displaced, sought refuge in schools managed by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip. In comparison, nearly 15,000 people sought refuge in schools managed by the Palestinian Authority.

For the sixth day in a row, Israeli occupation warplane raids and artillery shelling on the Gaza Strip continue, Al Mayadeen’s correspondent reported.

Our correspondent revealed that Israeli raids on the al-Karamah neighborhood, northwest of Gaza, are still ongoing, adding that the occupation also targeted the central region of the Strip.

He further added that the Israeli occupation warplanes targeted the city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, with raids focused on Khan Yunis and the eastern border of the Strip.
