China denounces UK ‘irresponsible rhetoric’ over Taiwan
China responds to the UK’s summoning of its Ambassador to Britain, affirming that “no foreign country, the UK included, has the right to meddle with the internal affairs of China.”
The Chinese Embassy in London condemned Britain's "irresponsible rhetoric" after Foreign Secretary Liz Truss summoned its Ambassador over Beijing's actions toward Taiwan.
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss summoned China's Ambassador to the UK, Zheng Zeguang, on Wednesday to demand an explanation for China's actions and rhetoric toward Taiwan.
In a statement, Truss said, "I instructed officials to summon the Chinese ambassador to explain his country’s actions."
During a meeting with a senior British Foreign Ministry official, Zheng “firmly rejected and strongly condemned UK side’s irresponsible rhetoric about China’s legitimate and necessary response to US House Speaker’s Taiwan visit," as per the Chinese Embassy statement.
“Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory. No foreign country, the UK included, has the right to meddle with the internal affairs of China," it added.
It is worth noting that the situation around Taiwan escalated following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taipei, despite China's repeated warnings and threats not to mess with the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and opposes any direct official foreign contacts with the island.
