China's President, Xi Jinping, met with Hong Kong's next leader in Beijing, John Lee. Xi pledged his full trust in the coming central government of Hong Kong, according to state media.

Lee traveled to the capital on Saturday to attain Beijing's blessing as the leader, who was a former security chief, looks to assume office next month.

The 64-year-old was elected as the next leader earlier this month.

"I believe that the administration of the new government will definitely bring forth a new atmosphere, and compose a new chapter in Hong Kong's development," Xi said, according to Xinhua.

Lee will be assuming office on July 1, on the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's transfer from British to Chinese rule, adopting a political model of "One Country, Two Systems." For 50 years, with a Chinese agreement, Hong Kong could maintain a certain level of freedom and autonomy.

Xi praised Lee, saying that he has the "courage to take responsibility" and "had made contributions to safeguarding national security and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability."

"The central government fully affirms and fully trusts you," Xi added.

On his part, Lee said he was "deeply honored by the appointment and fully aware of the great responsibility upon me," according to a statement from the Hong Kong government.

Lee vowed to "unite all sectors" and to "build Hong Kong into a city with long-term prosperity and a caring and inclusive society."

The former police chief raked up over 99% of the votes from a 1,461-member committee that elected him.

Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the United States, along with the European Union, have expressed panic over the selection of John Lee, complaining that his election is a "continued assault on political pluralism and fundamental freedoms."
