Xi hails Hong Kong government over stability
Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Hong Kong chief Carrie Lam's efforts and actions to restore political and social stability in the region.
Hong Kong's government has managed to restore order and stability and end violence over the past year by complying with the National Security Protection Law, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday.
"The measures taken by the Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, headed by Carrie Lam, helped Hong Kong integrate into the general course of development of the PRC," President Xi said during his meeting with Lam.
"In the past year, Hong Kong has consolidated the situation in which the city turned from chaos [during the 2019 social unrest] to peace, and has continued to develop in a positive direction," he said.
President Xi also praised the leader for her work in combating СOVID-19 and restoring the region's economy and social stability.
"The coronavirus pandemic has been effectively and obviously contained, the economy has gradually recovered, and society has remained stable," he said.
Chaos took place in Hong Kong in June 2019 after anti-government protestors took to the street, but order was restored through Beijing's national security law.
Under the law, subversion, secession, cooperation with foreign forces, and terrorist acts are all prohibited, and each violation could potentially lead to life in prison.
Reports indicate that the Hong Kong violent-turned protests were backed by the West in a bid to undermine China.
