Beijing slammed Ottawa's allegation about the threatening behavior of Chinese diplomats in Canada as "groundless smear", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

Yesterday the Canadian intelligence service accused Chinese diplomats of intimidating canadian parliamentarian Michael Chong and his family after sponsoring a motion accusing Beijing of alleged genocide against Uyghurs.  After summoning the chinese ambassador over the allegation, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said that Ottawa was considering expelling all  Chinese diplomats.

"We deplore and reject the Canadian side's groundless smear of the Chinese diplomatic and consular mission in Canada, which is merely fulfilling its duties ... I want to stress that the Chinese diplomatic and consular personnel in Canada always abide by relevant international conventions and perform their duties in accordance with the law," Mao said at a press conference.

The spokeswoman added that the Chinese ambassador has taken up the issue with Global Affairs Canada and equivocally senior official at the chinese foreign ministry had also made demarches to Canadian ambassador in China.

Two weeks ago, the Chinese military was reported to be on a state of high alert regarding developments in the Taiwan Strait: adding that they will take necessary measures in response to US arms producers' visit to Taiwan.

Back in April, Taiwanese media reported that 25 giant US weapons manufacturers will visit the island in early May, including China-sanctioned Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies.

The visit aims to discuss the joint production of arms and ammunition as the United States continues its hyper-militarization of countries in the vicinity of China.
