China voiced its opposition to reimposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program after Britain, France, and Germany warned the United Nations they would reimpose sanctions if no diplomatic solution is found by the end of August.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China "opposes invoking" sanctions and "believes that it does not help parties build trust and bridge differences and is not conducive to the diplomatic effort for the early resumption of talks."
Lin emphasized that "any moves taken by the Security Council now should help reach new agreements in talks, instead of the opposite," reinforcing China's position on diplomatic negotiations.
Iran announced on Thursday that it was collaborating with China and Russia to prevent the reinstatement of European sanctions, which had been relaxed following a 2015 agreement in exchange for restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.
E3 threatens sanctions, Iran prepared to respond
In a joint letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council on Wednesday, the foreign ministers of the E3 group, comprising Britain, France, and Germany, issued a warning about their intention to take such action.
The E3 group stated in their letter that they were "committed to using all diplomatic tools at our disposal to ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon."
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on state TV on Thursday, "We will try to prevent it," adding that "if this does not work and they apply it, we have tools to respond. We will discuss them in due course."
Araghchi has strongly rebuffed the threats to reinstate sanctions through the "snapback mechanism", asserting that "European countries have no right to reimpose sanctions on his country or trigger the snapback mechanism," while accusing them of breaching the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) themselves.
