China reopens embassy in Nicaragua
Nicaragua has recently broken its ties with Taiwan, prompting China to reopen its embassy in the Central American country.
On Friday, China reopened its embassy in Nicaragua just weeks after the Central American country switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to Beijing.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the reopening of the embassy, Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada said: "You are welcome in our Nicaragua... with the certainty that both countries have ahead of us a future of successes and victories in our brotherly relations."
Chinese official Yu Bu inaugurated the new embassy with Moncada and other officials, including Laureano Ortega, a son of and advisor to President Daniel Ortega.
It is worth mentioning that the restoration of ties with China comes as the United States and the European Union intensify sanctions against Nicaragua.
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has recently won a fourth consecutive presidential term after receiving more than 70 percent of the vote.
This latest rapprochement between China and Nicaragua has been irking the US, which previously attempted to delegitimize, to no avail, the Nicaraguan presidential election by calling it "a sham".
