China to hold 20th CCP Congress on October 16
The Chinese Communist Party is planning on holding its latest Congress on October 16. What's going to happen during Congress?
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the country's ruling party, will hold its 20th Congress on October 16, with incumbent President Xi Jinping expected to remain at the helm of the country's top body, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.
The decision will be made during the monthly meeting of the CCP Politburo, the Chinese agency said, noting that the party will elect during its Congress new CPP Central Committee and CCP Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
The preparatory work for the Congress is already underway, the report added. The Congress usually lasts for about a week and takes place away from the public eye at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
China's Congress is one of the most important events in China's political life, during which the results of the last five years are summed up and the plans for the country's future are drawn up.
Some forecasts suggest that the 20th Congress will see President Xi given a historic third leadership term, making him the country's strongest leader in decades.
Xi has made strides in terms of China's role in the international arena and the CCP's overall power, all the while bolstering socialism with Chinese characteristics, the report added.
There are no formal restrictions on how long the CPP's Secretary-General can remain in office.
