China has called on the United States to immediately lift all sanctions imposed on Cuba, reaffirming its support for the Cuban people’s struggle against foreign interference, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Guo stated that Beijing remains committed to standing with Cuba in safeguarding its sovereignty and dignity.
"China will continue calling for international justice and stay firmly committed to supporting the Cuban people in fighting against external interference and blockade, following the development path befitting Cuba's national conditions, and safeguarding sovereignty and dignity. We urge the US to heed the overwhelming call from the international community, immediately lift its blockade and sanctions on Cuba, and remove Cuba from the so-called 'list of state sponsors of terrorism,'" Guo said.
Guo also urged Washington to remove Cuba from the so-called list of “state sponsors of terrorism,” a designation that imposes additional financial and diplomatic restrictions.
UNGA renews call to end US sanctions
The comments followed the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, urging the US to end its decades-long blockade on Cuba. The resolution passed for the 33rd time, receiving support from 165 countries, with 12 abstentions and only seven nations voting against it.
Since 1992, the UN General Assembly has voted annually on resolutions calling for an end to the US sanctions on Cuba. These votes have consistently demonstrated widespread international opposition to the embargo.
The Cuban government has long criticized the US blockade, slamming it as a major obstacle to national development. Cuban officials say the sanctions, tightened under the administration of US President Donald Trump, have severely limited access to medicines, fuel, and other essential goods, exacerbating the country's economic challenges.
