Argentine football team coach contract extended
Lionel Scaloni will be coaching the Argentian football team in the next World Cup tournament in North America
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni's contract has been extended until 2026, according to the country's FA, after he guided the squad to a World Cup victory in Qatar last year.
Scaloni extended his contract with Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia on Monday in Paris, putting him through to the next World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
"Claudio Tapia and Lionel Scaloni met to close the extension of the contract as coach of the Senior Selection until 2026," the AFA said in a statement.
Scaloni was voted Best Coach of 2022 later that day, while in Paris at FIFA's 'The Best' Awards event.
"I am eternally grateful to the president of the AFA for giving me the opportunity to coach this wonderful national team," Scaloni said on receiving the award.
"I'm thankful for the players, those 26 who led us to glory. Without them, we could not have achieved anything."
Scaloni, who formerly played for Argentina's Newell's Old Boys, Lazio, and Mallorca, started his journey with the national team as part of the coaching staff led by Jorge Sampaoli, who was fired after 2018 World Cup in Russia after the Argentine team lost in the knock out stage.
