World Cup winner Argentina defeated France on penalties
As France appeared the inevitable winner to take the World Cup home, Messi jumped in putting Argentina 3-2 ahead in extra-time.
Argentina won the World Cup for the third time on Sunday, beating France 4-2 on penalties.
Argentina's Messi scored twice and France's Mbappe scored the first hat trick in a World Cup final that finished 3-3 after additional time at the Lusail Stadium.
Argentinian substitute Gonzalo Montiel scored the penalty after Kingsley Coman had an attempt saved by Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
France had initially fought back from 2-0 and then 3-2 in extra time to make it 3-3 by the game was taken to penalties.

With the penalty spot in the first half, Messi initially gave Argentina the edge toward victory before Mbappe scored twice in the 80th and 81st minutes to level it at 2-2.

But there was more drama two minutes from the end of extra-time as Montiel committed the handball for the 3-3 equalizing penalty.
PSG's Mbappe stepped up to score for the second time to take the game to penalties.
Messi wins Golden Ball for best player at World Cup 2022
After leading Argentina to win in the World Cup final against France, Lionel Messi was awarded the Golden Ball for the tournament's best player on Sunday.
Messi scored twice in the championship match in Doha to bring his tournament total to seven goals. He also scored in the shootout as Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in overtime.
Despite finishing second behind Messi in that contest, Kylian Mbappe took home the Golden Boot for the tournament's best scorer with eight goals, one more than the Argentine captain.
After contributing to Croatia's third-place result, Luka Modric placed third in the voting for the best player.
Emiliano Martinez of Argentina won the Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper at the World Cup, and his compatriot Enzo Fernandez, age 21, was named best young player.
Following their victories in 1978 and 1986, Argentina was able to win the World Cup for a third time with their victory over France.
