Conspiracy to destabilize Honduras similar to 2009 coup, Castro warns
The Honduran President cautions the people of Honduras that political figures that were involved in the 2009 coup against former President Manuel Zelaya seek to destabilize the country.
Honduran President Xiomara Castro, on Friday, stressed that political figures who, back in 2009, planned a coup in Tegucigalpa against former President Manuel Zelaya, her husband, remained unpunished and have now found the opportunity to attempt to disrupt the current government.
According to Castro, "There is a conspiracy that is being formed" which needed to be made "clear to the Honduran people."
Castro argued that "respect for the law should be fundamental for all Hondurans," adding that "a few phrases to generate destabilization should be called to justice for treason against the homeland."
The Honduran President cautioned the nation's people, saying, "Let's just look at the political figures who are coming out, the same ones that contributed to the coup d'etat in 2009."
It is worth noting that shortly after ousting Zelaya, Honduras announced it was severing ties with Venezuela, and shortly after Castro took office, Honduran-Venezuelan ties were once again restored.
Honduras and China establish diplomatic ties
Formal diplomatic ties between China and Honduras have officially been established. Meanwhile, Taiwan rushed to blame Beijing for what it called using "coercion and intimidation" to lure away its few remaining allies.
Shortly after Tegucigalpa declared it had formally broken ties with Taipei, Beijing announced its establishment of ties with the former.
"China and Honduras just established diplomatic relations," tweeted Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
This came just a few days after Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina visited Beijing to establish diplomatic ties, as per government officials.
After losing a number of Latin American allies in recent years, Taiwan would have just 13 nations with which it has formal diplomatic relations.
Last month, Taiwan recalled its ambassador to Honduras over the visit by Tegucigalpa's Foreign Minister to China, as per a statement released by Taipei's government.
