Cuba says foiled 'terrorist' plot 'organized, financed' on US soil
The Cuban Interior Ministry says a Cuban citizen who had been living in the United States was apprehended after illegally entering Cuba by sea.
Cuba announced on Sunday that it had foiled a "terrorist plot" organized and financed on US soil and arrested its mastermind and several others.
The Cuban Interior Ministry (MININT) reported in the state newspaper Granma that a Cuban citizen, Ardenys Garcia Alvarez, who had been living in the United States, was apprehended after illegally entering Cuba by sea.
Garcia Alvarez was found with firearms and ammunition, as part of a new recruitment plan to execute violent actions within Cuba.
The ministry noted that the suspect had entered the United States as an undocumented migrant in 2014. It also mentioned that other individuals involved in the plot had been detained in Cuba.
MININT said the operation was based on information received in December about a plan "to execute violent actions in our country."
In the same month, Cuba released a list of several dozen suspected "terrorists", many of whom reside abroad, primarily in the United States.
The list included individuals accused by Havana of participating in a series of hotel bombings in 1997 and assassination attempts against former leader Fidel Castro.
Granma confirmed that Cuban Television will broadcast a special program with evidence about the thwarted plot and its main stakeholders.
