Cuban President Congratulates Maduro On Electoral Victory
After a victory for Venezuela's United Socialist Party, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez congratulated President Maduro.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel congratulated the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) on its regional and municipal electoral success.
"Congratulations to the brave Venezuelan people and the Great Patriotic Pole [a union of left-wing movements in Venezuela], headed by brother-president Nicolas Maduro, on a decisive victory in regional and municipal elections held in Venezuela," Diaz-Canel wrote on Twitter.
Venezuela held regional and municipal elections on Sunday. The elections gathered a total of 42 national political organizations and 64 regional parties.
23 new state governors, 335 mayors, 253 legislators, and nearly 2,400 members of local councils will be elected as a result of the election.
PSUV won 20 governorships, according to the electoral council, with 90.21% of the votes counted. The Caracas Mayor's Office was similarly won by the party.
Over 300 people from 55 countries came to Venezuela to observe the preparations and vote-counting process.
Representatives from the European Union Election Observation Mission, the US Carter Center, the United Nations, the Council of Electoral Specialists of Latin American, as well as the Central Election Commission of Russia are among them.
United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) wins 20 out of 23 governorates
The PSUV, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s party, won 20 out of 23 governorates as well as the mayorship of the capital Caracas in the elections that were held on Sunday.
Maduro celebrated the landslide victory this morning by affirming his party's will to establish joint efforts with winners from the opposition: "We are going to work with dialogue, with understanding, we are going to work with goodwill, with good faith; I extend my hand to the elected governors of the opposition to meet, make joint plans."
