Damascus airport to re-open for international flights on Tuesday
Syria's Damascus International Airport will operate for air traffic starting Tuesday, January 7, according to the country's new government.
Syrian Civil Aviation and Air Transport Authority Chairman Ashhad al-Salibi announced that Damascus International Airport will resume international flights starting Tuesday, January 7.
In a statement to the official news agency, SANA, al-Salibi reassured both Arab and international airlines, saying, "We are in the process of fully rehabilitating both Aleppo and Damascus airports with the help of our partners to ensure they can receive flights from all over the world."
The announcement comes after the temporary suspension of flights from Damascus International Airport, which began on December 23, 2024, and was scheduled to last until January 1, 2025. The suspension exempted only flights with special permission from the Civil Aviation Authority.
On December 8, Damascus International Airport had been evacuated of all personnel, with all flights halted following significant political changes and security tensions in Syria. These events culminated in the opposition forces gaining control and overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad.
