Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Tuesday stressed the urgent need to implement the first phase of US President Donald Trump's "peace" initiative, calling for the acceleration of humanitarian aid flows and the release of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners.
During a joint press conference held on Tuesday with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, Abdelatty stated that negotiations are ongoing in Sharm el-Sheikh to advance the process.
He emphasized the importance of rapidly enabling the entry of aid and securing the release of Palestinian prisoners held by the Israeli occupation, further noting that discussions are underway for the repositioning of Israeli occupation forces, which would later lead to their full withdrawal from Gaza.
Abdelatty also underscored the importance of creating a political landscape that would eventually lead to the recognition of a Palestinian state and expressed hope that Germany would continue to play a key role in the matter, urging Berlin to influence, pressure, and help push for the implementation of the plan.
Key points under discussion
Earlier today, at a press conference in Cairo alongside Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, Abdelatty explained that the negotiations are also addressing the full and unconditional entry of humanitarian aid through UN channels, and the creation of a "just peace process" grounded in the "two-state" solution and full political unity between the West Bank and Gaza.
Abdelatty also confirmed that Cairo is preparing an international conference for Gaza's reconstruction, in coordination with European and Arab partners, and welcomed US President Donald Trump's Gaza proposal, describing it as "a possible starting point" for negotiations, though Egypt continues to warn against any arrangement that legitimizes occupation or displacement.
The ongoing indirect negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, mediated by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar, began on Monday, coinciding with the second anniversary of the war on Gaza. According to Egyptian diplomatic sources cited by Al Mayadeen and international outlets, the talks are centered on a US-backed framework involving a ceasefire, a phased Israeli withdrawal, and a reciprocal exchange of captives and prisoners.
